How do I test my central heating to see if it requires a power flush

If you are unsure if your central heating is needing a central heating power flush, you can either call us out and we will do the test for you or you can search on the internet for the ‘Adey Magnaclean Rapid Test‘ and wait a couple of days until you get it delivered. In most cases when calling a plumbing engineer out to make the test, you will most likely find the engineer with experience will just tell you if you need the central heating flower flushing done or not but unfortunately you will just have to trust them. If you are reading this then you are most likely a step ahead of most engineers out there trying to make a quick buck. If the engineer has a tool that can test your central heating, it then explains to you that your central heating needs central heating power flush, then this may be the best way as the tools then don’t lie.

If you are looking to use the Adey Magnaclean Rapid Test, all you need to do is drain your central heating water via a drain off valve by using a draining hosepipe either direct to the outside or into a bucket for two minutes well sticking the test point under the central heating water. If the test point stays white then you don’t require your central heating to be flushed out.

There’s another way to check if you need a power flush and that is to use a magnet by placing it against a copper of plastic pipe and finding out if there is any slight pull (some will call this stickiness).

Another way of checking is by putting your hand at the bottom middle of the radiator and checking if it is as hot as the rest of the radiator.

Who should I call if my central heating is requiring a power flush

If you are requiring a power flush to your central heating you will need to call a gas safe registered engineer which Martin Smith can provide. If you would like Martin Smith an experienced emergency plumber and a gas safe registered engineer then please give us a call on the above number.

How long does it take to do a power flush

Doing a standard 8 radiator central heating system power flush can take about 3-hours to 2-days depending on how bad the central heating system is, but on average a power flush can be done in a day.

How much does it cost to do a power flush

The cost of doing a power flush all depends on how bad the central heating system is but as a standard cost without there being any major problems start from as shown below.

  • 1st radiator £99 (Option 1).
  • 2nd radiator £75 (Option 2).
  • 3rd radiator £75 (Option 3).
  • 4th radiato £75 (Option 4).
  • 5th radiator £75 (Option 5).
  • 6th radiator £50 (Option 6).
  • 7th radiator £40 (Option 7).

On a standard 7 radiator house the cost on a central heating flush you will be looking to pay £499.00, which will then also include your central heating protector at the end of the job (Option 8).

Our average home we deal with would be at around 10-radiators at the package of £599.00 working out at about £33 per radiator extra (Option 9).

Anything above 10 radiator would be include in the package as shown below.

  • £699 up to 13 radiators. (Option 10).
  • £799 up to 16 radiators. (Option 11).
  • £899 up to 19 radiators. (Option 12).
  • £999 up to 22 radiators. (Option 13).

Anything above 22 would be bespoke package but bear in mind that any system with more than 22-radiators to to a central heating power flush that it starts to get a bit more complicated.

Can there be any further hidden costs when requiring a power flush

If the central heating has a blockage then this may be more serious and may even need new plumbing depending on how bad the blockage is and what type of system you have. Sometimes if your central heating is really bad it can then cause more harm than good for example blocking up heating exchanges within the central heating boiler. The worse scenario is that you may need a complete central heating system but is very rare. If you are lucky, it may just be a central heating airlock.

Is there any way of checking how much sludge or how much dirt is in the central heating system or do I have to get an expert to do this for me

The only way for an occupant to test how much central heating sludge or dirt there is in the radiators is to check the areas of where it is warming up but other than this unless you carry a thermal image camera, then this is then a job for the experts. To have a full analyst of the central heating system including the boiler, it is always a good idea to carry a thermal imaging camera. For some engineers you can get this equipment especially if you have the iPhone 5 just for the iPhone use but not for the iPhone 6 until May 2015 when they bring out a new upgrade.

What should be in my central heating once the power flush has been completed

Once the central heating has been complete and you are wondering what should be in there then the best thing to have is the best central heating inhibitor to protect the central heating system which can make it run more smoothly.

Once the central heating system has had a power flush is there, anything else I can do to help maintain the efficiency of the central heating system

The best thing that can be done is to have a central heating filter fitted which soon depending on the date you are reading this, central heating filters then will be standard manufactures instructions. Any dirt going round the central heating system will then be collected by the filter saving you requiring any future needs for the system to have a central heating power flush.
